CHAPTER EIGHT

As dusk settled over Linden Falls, snow began to fall. The ladies finished decorating their houses and Millie admired the roofs made up of colorful candy wafers, or thatched with squares of cereal. Candies and gumdrops provided color and snowmen and trees adorned the yards. They were lingering over tea, wine, and snacks, but with the arrival of snow, the ladies started to fetch their coats and make plans to get home.

Paige called Reed and he came to the rescue to drive Agnes and Cecilia home and Chet’s big truck was parked at the curb waiting for Norma. Amber and Kiera had limited themselves to one glass of wine and headed out the door with their houses and some leftover snacks.

After Millie helped tote the ladies’ houses to their cars, she hurried back to the porch. Nicole handed her a bag of leftovers. “I’m so glad you joined us. I had fun building our house together. I’ll bring it by your shop tomorrow and you can display it like you talked about.”

“That sounds great. That’s so sweet of you to let me have it. I’m sure I’d drop it if I tried to take it and wrangle Bingo tonight. I had a wonderful time. Thanks for including me.” She flipped up her furry trimmed hood on her jacket and descended the steps.

Nicole waved from the door. “Be careful in the snow and I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Millie texted Jed before she trudged along the sidewalk, already piling up with snow, to the hardware store. When she arrived at the door, he was there with Bingo, ready to go. “Do you need some help?” he asked.

“I’m fine. The bag is light and we don’t have far to go. Thanks again for watching my girl.”

“Anytime. They’re worn out, so she should sleep like a baby tonight.”

“Ah, she’s not the only one. Have a good night, Jed.”

With the snow falling and the glow of the lights on the tree, the square reminded her of a Christmas movie. She took hold of Bingo’s leash and set out down the block.

As she stood under the awning in front of her door, Millie stomped her boots to remove the snow and after unlocking the door, grabbed a towel she kept in a storage bench inside the door. She used it to dislodge the snow from Bingo’s paws. The patient dog was used to the practice and even helped by lifting her paws.

With Bingo’s paws as dry as she could get them, Millie stepped inside, slipped out of her boots and carried them to the backroom to let them dry overnight. The two of them headed upstairs and once inside, Millie added more logs to the fire.

Bingo stood, waiting by her bowl, staring between it and Millie. “I know,” said Millie, warming her hands. “I’ll get your dinner ready.”

Her golden ears pricked at the mention of a meal. Once Millie was warmer, she added food to Bingo’s bowl and then wandered downstairs to collect the things she needed to start working on the homemade gift for Secret Santa.
